Asian Gas Demand Drives Upstream Development

In this month’s issue, we see that the continued growth of Asian gas demand has resulted in ambitious plans for upstream development. From shale gas to conventional gas reserves, developers and governments in China, India and Pakistan are targeting domestic reserves to meet unmet demand. As these economies continue to grow upstream investment will track along with such growth. Such countries seek to supply an increasing amount of gas to meet demand to offset reliance on expensive imports.

For China’s part, it looks to target unconventional gas reserves to boost domestic production. China looks to begin commercial shale gas production soon, targeting production of 6.5 billion cubic meters per year (bcm/y) of the resource by 2015. China plans to speed up shale gas development by asking companies to invest three times the amount sought for crude oil areas. The Ministry of Land and Resources has drafted legislation that would allow the government to seize blocks if companies fail to invest US$4,747 per square kilometer in exploration annually on shale gas blocks....Full Article
